The National Education Society and Saraswathi Vidya Bhavan Education Group of 69 Vibrant institutions (NES-SVB Group) bears eloquent testimony to the power of one visionary, Dr. R. Varadarajan, who has been working with single- minded focus and foresight towards “Redefining education for tomorrow’s world”.
Dr. R. Varadarajan, on his own, assumed the onus of creating access to quality and value-based education and for transforming some of the far-flouring suburban areas of Mumbai and Thane Districts. Thus, came the existence of National Education Society (NES), the seeds of which were sown in 1963 with just 7 students enrolled for learning with this young visionary and entrepreneurial teacher in his humble 10*10 slum cottage at Bhandup, which was then an underdeveloped area known more as settlement for brown collar workers. This tiny NES School became the first school to prove his mettle in education. The benefits of telecommunications and social media did not exist then; He set milestones for himself in building a number of institutions, so that the students in his school could have a well-laid route for their educational journey. Thereafter, came the first school building with active support of neighboring people, townhouses Primary and Secondary School, and further followed by a Junior College. His efforts got yet another spur when the NES Primary School was declared the ‘Best School’ by the Education Department of Bombay Municipal Corporation (MCGM) in the School’s fifth year. This provided a great impetus and as the institution grew, so did the qualitative achievements – by the school, the students and the Founder, Remarkably, the first batch SSC students notched a success with 100% results in the wake of the achievements of this nascent school, merit ranks were scored by NES students. The Founder did not, however, rest on any laurels and worked yet harder for expansion by constructing schools and colleges with varied descriptions of study, thus strengthening the NES-SVB Group of 69 institutions.
In the year 1983, he formed a sister trust Saraswathi Vidya Bhavan (SVB) to offer the finest professional education and also education for the not-so-privileged children. This educational trust was placed under the care of Mrs. Saraswathi Varadarajan, a born teacher. This trust established 3 Kindergarten schools followed by their Primary and Secondary schools. As a part of corporate social responsibility, the SVB Trust set up a school in Dharavi slum too where the children had neither any school nor the light of education they could ever dare to reach. Further, under the flamboyant leadership of Dr. R. Varadarajan, the SVB opened a school in the less-developed suburb of Dombivli providing education to the adivasi students of the area. The school at rural Dombivli has awakened villagers with the light of education and its enormous contribution to progress and development. This was just the beginning of SVB which later established many other schools and colleges with multiple disciplines under the banner of the prestigious NES-SVB Group.
Today under the able leadership of Dr. R. Varadarajan, the NES-SVB Group has blossomed into 69 vibrant educational institutions providing quality education over 47,872 students with teaching faculty over 1200. As whole, the NES-SVB Group caters to a diverse student community, right from Kindergarten to the Doctoral level through their institutions at Mumbai and Thane Districts.
Dr. R. Varadarajan and his dedicated team have tirelessly worked towards providing educational facilities for all, especially for the underprivileged. The institutions are improved upon by each hour of the day therefore, the students are not only delivering 100% results but are also scoring merit ranks consecutively over the years.
The Group is spread over six complexes in Mumbai and Thane District i.e., Bhandup (2), Mulund, Dharavi, Dombivli and Dawdi (Thane). These institutions offer education in Arts, Science, Commerce, Management, Foreign Languages, Teacher’s Education, Pharmacy Education, Music, Dance, and Technology and so on. Special institutions for providing education to handicapped children with special impediments have also been established, a reflection of the Founder’s keen concern for the handicapped students. The NES also has a Medical Centre, Staff Training College and an R&D Facility in Education, Science & Technology.

SVB’s Saraswathi College of Education & Research is one of the prime units of the parent body – NES-SVB Education Group of 69 Institutions. The College is recognized by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Bhopal and affiliated to S.N.D.T. Women’s University. It is established and managed by Saraswathi Vidya Bhavan, an Educational Trust registered with the Charity Commissioner, Greater Mumbai.
SVB’s Saraswathi College of Education and Research was set up in order to facilitate professional education and career options for girl students who would otherwise be deprived of such opportunities in the hinterland areas of Thane District.
Well equipped with the latest facilities like spacious, technology-enabled lecture halls including Interactive Boards, a well-stocked library with books, journals and educational research publications, the institution offers a wide range of training programs to prepare teachers for the modern demands in the classroom.
Programs like educational visits, nature walks, workshops, case studies, seminar presentations, community work, awareness programs, visits to special schools etc., are conducted to create social and civil awareness so that student-teachers are better informed about societal development and needs.
In addition to the University prescribed curriculum for teacher training, two years at SVB’s Saraswathi College of Education & Research also prepare them for the increasingly popular teaching-learning methods followed for the International Baccalaureate and Cambridge Assessment International Education Curricula. Teacher trainees graduating from our Institution are well equipped to take up teaching assignments in International Schools too. Inquiry-based learning, constructive approach, concept-based learning etc. are an integral part of their training.
The students are also exposed to Entrepreneurship ideas and recognize the need for entrepreneurial thinking and attitudes. An annual Inter-collegiate competition on themes like “Innovations in Interactive Teaching,” “EduQuiz” and “Innovative Teaching Aids” are unique features taken up by our Institution.
